Product overview

The policy is built for life. Once you sign up your dog, they're eligible for lifelong coverage.
Coverage for all new injuries and illnesses. The Trupanion policy pays 90% of treatment costs for eligible conditions—with no payout limits.
No networks. You can visit any veterinary, emergency, or specialty hospital in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Australia—no need for a referral or preapproval.

Waiting periods

After you enroll, your coverage begins on the first of the following month after your waiting periods pass.

Waiting periods are 5 days for injuries and 30 days for illnesses.

What’s not covered

We’re here for the unexpected, so we don’t cover expected costs:

Pre-existing conditions: Things that existed before enrollment or during waiting periods (this means both diagnosed conditions and undiagnosed conditions that show signs or symptoms)
Preventive care: Commonly referred to as wellness or routine care
Exam fees & sales tax where applicable
Cosmetic or elective procedures

Insurance, not wellness

Wellness plans help pet owners finance the cost of expected, routine care for their pet, such as vaccinations, dental cleanings, annual examinations, etc. We do not cover wellness-related costs in the same way an auto insurance policy doesn’t cover things like oil changes or air filter replacements. Pet owners, just like car owners, know there are costs that come with having a pet in their family—expected costs for which they can budget. Our policy steps in for the things that are difficult to budget for—the unknown, unexpected, and potentially high veterinary costs for new injuries and illnesses.
